Broken PS3?

Post  mick182 on Sat Sep 11, 2010 11:18 pm

Dang, I think my PS3 is broken, everything works apart from the blu ray drive. Clicks when a disk goes in and out, doesn't recognise the disk.

Been trolling site for a cheap fix, the options include - getting a YLOD unit from ebay and swapping the drives out, plenty of tutoprials on the net on how to do this.

Buying a referbished BD for $150, I would have to do it myself, even more work that just swapping the drives out, which isn't that scary, but at present, it can still be used as a media centre (without the BD of course) I don't want to screw it up, and espcially that homebrew and emulators seem to be on the way in, it could be a useful device still.

Warhark is on my HD, so it's not too bad.

The other option is either to buy a new unit or go the Sony fix, at $250 isn't a bad deal, as long as I get a new unit, not the old one refurbished.

Anyone had similar problems? or had a unit fixed?

Yep I had the same problem with my first ps3. A month or so after I got the BR drive stopped recognizing discs but everything else worked fine. As I was still under warranty I sent it back to Sony and got sent an entirely new ps3 unit, a new box with a controller, and cords included.
