DLC

Post  mrcrowley24 on Fri Oct 08, 2010 3:45 am

What is everyone's thought on Downloadable Content (DLC)? What have been your favourites and what would you like to see more of?

I believe in DLC. I think it has the potential to be great.

DLC has been essential for MP only game slike warhawk and Unreal Tournament 3. It has also been sucessful in games like MW2/ KZ2 where the MP is just as anticipated. While there are games where we would like to see more DLC (Warhawk which only got 3 DLC Maps) DLC has been welcomed and helped to creat longevity.

However I think that DLC has been pretty average for SP games. It really has only added extra characters/costumes and weapons. Now before you say that DLC doesn't fit in with SP games I would point you to the Force Unleashed which brought out 3 "what if" DLC scenarios and was warmly welcomed. Bioshock 2 also brought out a 4 hour DLC recently. Why cant they do something similar to Uncharted 2, Dead Space or God of War 3? People are willing to pay the money for it!

Its just that usually a sequel takes about 2-3 years and thats just a long time to wait!

DLCs are awesome, especially when they bring in new things, like game modes or different maps. They create more variety for a game you already enjoy without costing too much.

DLC just doesn't work with every game. A game like God of War should not have DLC, in my opinion.

I loved the four DLC packs for Fallout 3. That is what SP DLC should be. Things like costumes/cars etc are fucking garbage.

Fallout's DLC is the best I have seen.

RPGs have good potential for DLC coz they can had whole new area, abilities and most importantly, increase the level cap.
Borderlands has good DLC because of the aforementioned reasons.

i agree with cap, rpg DLC is great. Just like for Fallout 3 and Oblivion because they offer
a lot more than DLC for say LBP cos they are all small things like costumes. Red Dead
Redemption and Assassins Creed 2 also have decent DLC. These are the types of games which I believe to have decent DLC

Like you've all said, i think DLC can be good but it has to be rewarding and fun. This works a treat for MP games because they can incorporate new maps, skins, vehicles and rewards. Its not so easy for SP games because in order for it to be worth the money the player has to get many hours out of it and it can't get boring quick. Games like MW2, Warhawk, BFBC2 and Burnout all had/have huge fan bases which will be continuously playing, so even if the DLC is shit, they will play it anyway and not get bored because others are always in the game with them. DLC for games like Fallout and Borderlands is great because its a continuous grind to try and reach the level cap and get a whole lot of new gear.

I don't think DLC is good when the developer will come out with DLC right after launch of the game (mafia 2 was one which i noticed). I feel that the stuff in the DLC could have ben included in the main game and we're getting ripped off for a whole lot of stuff which probably could have been included.

You bring up a good point Gasman about Developers bringing out DLC very soon after the initial game being released. Resident Evil 5 did the same which is joke. Devolopers should focus solely on the game and worry about DLC later. Yeah Red Dead DLC has been a joke Gunn. Paying shit loads worth for things like a Tomohawk, whoptido!

I think with DLC there are three things which have to come into account. It has to be worth the money. Not just some extra costumes or something, for $15-20 you would expect something decent. It has to have a whole lot of re-playability to be worth the money spent and it has to be FUN! Not saying that all are not fun, but on the odd occasion, there are dlc packs which fall far short of what they should be.

I should have put this in the 2010 awards, but what does everything think was the best piece of DLC for 2010?

Although I haven't even played it yet, I would have to say RDR's undead nightmare pack. It adds a few more hours to the campaign and also some MP levels. And it has zombies!!!

Anything that extends SP is a win for me!
