Disc drive broken :(

Finally got a new tv today, Bravia, and when i went to play some ps3 on it the game didn't show up in the game section. I turned off the system and tried again. Still didn't work. I put a few other discs in, still nothing.
Anyone got any ideas as to what to do? i'll probably have to try and get a new one

put a DVD movie in and tell me if it works.

the dvd worked, it showed up on the drop down menu. So its only the games which aren't working.

Sounds like a laser fail.
You're red one (for DVD's CD's) works but your Blue one (Blu-ray's, games) isn't.

Are you still under warranty?

it's blu rays that aren't working. I have heard of this before (dvd's working, blu rays not).
I don't think there is a fix, because it has got something to do with the blue laser which reads the discs.

A new drive, or ps3, would seem the only way to play blu rays.

yeahh, thought that might be the case. Nah im not. I got the console back in January of 2008 so its well out.

I might just trade it in and use the money from it to help buy a slim.

turns out its actually my hard drive
I put my old 40gb in and the game showed up, thought that maybe just moving it around the laser fired up again. Put my 160 back in and its not showing up again. very weird.

well that's good then. Back up the hdd and restore the data onto a different one.

Thats great to know! Apparently my 60GB back home won't read DVD's, but can play games, so hopefully its just the hard drive! Fingers crossed!

yeahh im happy that i don't have to buy a new one, but its kinda annoying that i have to shift all my game saves over i just added up how much room they take up and its 29GB roughly. Going to have to make a few trips but im just happy that its all up and running now. But i was wondering, would anyone have any idea why the HDD is effecting the blue ray player? seems really odd.

You cannot make "trips" when doing a system restore. Back up the entire playstation in one go.
I have done over 5 backup and restores, so consider yourself lucky.

29GB of game saves? impossible mate.
If you were planning to put in a usb drive and just selecting 'copy' on the save files then putting them on a different ps3, the save files will not work. A simply copy and paste with game save files will only work on the same ps3 with the same hard drive.

I have been playing Fallout 3/Fallout New Vegas between 2 houses with 2 separate PS3's.
I just copy the save file to an external drive.

Ive finished shit load's of games in the UK and want to use the save files on my Oz PS3.

Otherwise,what's the point!

To be honest they are the only 2 games that I've tried but they work fine.
Not to mention I play Final Fantasy VIII on both my PS3 and 2 separate PSPs
