THE LANCER GUIDE TO YLOD
As you know we had this happen to our PS3 about a year ago and I managed to fix it using the below method. I don't know if I was lucky but it is still working now, though it doesn't get the heavy usage it used to, but still get used a fair bit.
What you will need: Pen, Paper, Phillips head screwdriver, Flat head screwdriver, Heat gun, thermal paste (computer store), digital camera.
Here is a link to the heat Gun I used...
http://www.bunnings.com.au/products_product_200w-bosch-heat-gun_4371.aspx
Good on Bunnings. Just noticed that the web page description of the heat gun is wrong. That is supposed to be a 2000W Heat Gun not 200W.
Don't used a hair dryer or a lower wattage gun as it won't get hot enough to flow the solder.
Next I followed these 3 You Tube video's to the letter. I watched them a few times before I started so I knew the basic sequence of taking it apart, heating and putting it back together.
Tips: use the pen, paper or camera to write down or photo where you took each screw from on the PS3 as they are all different lengths. I just took all mine out without remembering where they had come from then had to spend ages working out where they went when I put it back together. If you do it methodically, record them and put the screws into some sort of order you shouldn't have any problems. Also record or photo where you unplug the cables and cords from inside the PS3.
I did the heating at the same temperature and the exact same amount of time and the same CPU / GPU as the video. I actually did it whilst watching the video and followed his movements as he did them just to be safe. When you finish your board will be extremely hot and will be making a whole heap of crunching and cracking noises as it cools down. DON'T TOUCH IT, as the plastic circuit board is soft and it will go out of shape and be impossible to get back into the ps3. Let it cool right down before putting the thermal paste on it.
If you remember (or recorded) where every cord and cable was plugged into then it should be pretty straight forward to put it back together.
Hopefully, all going well, it will be working again.
I hope this makes sense........Good luck you will need it

Well Az came over yesterday and we took apart my original 60 GB PS3 and Vacuumed it (Dusty as inside it), cleaned off the old thermal paste on the CPU and GPU and put some new stuff over them. Then we put her back together. Working fine at the moment. I hadn't had any problems, but I was just getting worried as she is an old one and it seems everyone else's has YLOD'd.
The fan used to sound like a helicopter taking off and its quietened down. Maybe it was due to the dust inside it.
The PS3 doesn't recognise any dvd's when you put them in, early next year I am going to put a bigger hard drive in and get play tv, so I will see if is similar to gasman's problem or mine could be something entirely different.
Also, apparently it wouldn't play my UK dead space game when I sent it back. I will have to investigate that as well. Perhaps the disc is damaged.

I'll have to get Az to fix mine.
Just YLOD again (after a repair)

How long did your repair last for?
Mines been going for like a month and a half yet with no problems...
But I know 1 day its just going to start blinking at me again

ok, turns out its not just dvd's that won't work, but all disc types (dvd, blu-rays, therefore fucking games!lol).
Too bad that I tore off the warranty sticker yesterday and I doubt sony would repair it for free.
So its probably a laser in the unit. I guess I could format it and see if that does the trick, but I doubt it. Might replace the HD and see if its the same as Gasman's problem.
Does anyone know of any professional ps3 repair guys in Newcastle or North Sydney? Can they put a new laser in?
(I can still play warhawk as I have a downloaded version. If I knew it was all disc's, I would have brought back my UK as carry on luggage. I have to wait 8-12 weeks for the fucker to get shipped back).

Repair lasted a little of six weeks.
I'd be worried.

Ahh so I went into EB-Games today and asked them how much for a working 40gb to trade in for a slim...
After some tapping on his keyboard, he came back and said $80...
My instant reply, 80 bucks for a working ps3 console (Didnt mention a recovered YLOD console) he goes yeah...
I turned around to a random guy.... bro, would you buy a 40gb ps3 for 150.. he replied if I had the money hell yeah... I looked back at the eb-games guy, so you still want $80? lol...
Changed nothing, but damned if Id give it to him for $80...
I traded in 3 games for $60/70 off ... 2 were platinum 1 year old + games..... Something is def wrong with their system i thinks...
Looks like im gonna keep it for homebrew....
And HP a slim somewhere...
