Post  azza2906 on Tue Feb 22, 2011 9:48 pm

Has any1 here got much of an idea? I kno u do super. I hav recently installed ubuntu 10.10 onto a old workstation computer ( dual processor dual core xeon 2.6ghz(1333 fsb), 4g ram, 4 drive 15k 80g sas-scsi raid, with 2 dual head graphics cards (quadro fx3500 and quadro fx370).

Anyway I'm not bad at unix but I'm wondering if any1 has any advice, knows any good software or any information at all to help me out.

I installed it 2 try and move away from windows and learn something new.

Thoughts?

Well theres not really much you can say about Linux in one post but really the most important things are:

1. Find your Window app equivalents
eg. OpenOffice.org instead of Microsoft Office
Thunderbird instead of Outlook, etc

2. Get familiar with the filesystem
eg. /home is like /Documents and Settings on Windows

And most of all have fun!!!!

You could also try and register at the ubuntu forums as thats probably the first place to look when problems occur

Last but not least, there is quite a good blog for Ubuntu users demonstrating new apps, tips , etc at
http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/

Ahahahah I see you found Compiz Fusion....
Whilst cool at the moment, you'll see as it gets old that you use it less and less Razz

My biggest discovery for a long time was the combination of Sickbeard and SABnzbd
If your interested in TV shows it is a lethal combo!
Basically it downloads, and processes, the TV shows that you watch. It does this week-by-week as they are released!
It's epic to come home from School and have 2 TV shows ready to watch when I sit down! No user interaction required Razz

On another topic, Google Chrome on Linux is absolutely beast (similar to Windows) and so if you haven't swapped from Firefox I would definitely recommend it.

Just my latest updates ahaha
