Log incomputer playing up

computer playing up

My laptop boots up normally, but when it gets to the desktop it only loads the thumbnails and won't show the text below them (internet explorer below the e symbol. etc). I effectively cannot use it as no words come up.
Any ideas what is wrong
I can get my files off it so its not the end of the world,but if I can fix I would be happy.
