Re: Laptops
I bought a laptop about six weeks ago. Got an ASUS
specs:
4GB RAM
1GB Graphics
Dual 2.2
16" screen
500GB hdd
etc, etc for $1300. It's a good time to buy.
One for ya GF's b'day seems a bit excessive, but that's just me. Buy a $800 one if it's just for Facebook.

Re: Laptops
I don't think you can really go too far wrong in terms of brand, given that most of them use the same internal parts.
In that price range I reckon you've got two options, either one of those mega tiny netbook things which are really convenient and handy for travelling etc, or a low spec normal laptop.
Just scope out the options in your price range and pick the one with the biggest numbers. RAM is a pretty good indicator to keep an eye on.
Also, you can google any model you might come across and almost without fail read some online reviews to get an idea of quality etc.

Re: Laptops

Re: Laptops
Buzz I would steer away from macs. Unless your GF is into graphic design or shit like that.
I would spend a decent bit on it, only being that unlike a desktop you cant upgrade a laptop (apart from RAM and hard drive) if you get a cheaper one. However, if its only for your GF and for you to download movies (ie porn), then go for it.
Like Cap said, netbooks dont have a cd/dvd drive.

Re: Laptops
I bought Tez a macbook ages ago. (for her birthday no less)
She uses the Net or Graphic design.
I'd recommend something along the lines of a $600 - $800 though.
Try the dell 1525 for $700~ or some of the lower spec Compacs/HP's for about the same.

The Mac Pro has had the ability to upgrade to 16gb for some time now, A customized top of the line 8 - Core Mac Pro will cost you somewhere around $22,000.
That's if you opt for the highest spec with dual 30" screens.
I have a Dual Core G5 powermac and I love it.
I also have an abused Dell 1525 without an enter key.
Sorry for the double post.

Re: Laptops
Macs are overpriced. Laptops are stupid. You can get a desktop for half of what a laptop would cost and never worry about the battery ever again. Laptops that do not work without a battery installed is the biggest scam in PC history that I can remember. I can take the battery out of my PSP, throw it away, and plug it in the A/C charger and it will play all day. No can do with a laptop, they apparently need a battery.
@gunn, holy shit, I cant believe that they charge $1300 for a laptop like that. I would be outraged. They sell laptops similar to yours for $500 to $600 in the US.
