Vinyls and Turntables

Post  Brad on Mon Mar 01, 2010 2:38 pm

Mainly directed at Gunn but anyone with a collection could help.

I'm looking at a new turntable as my old one is too hard to find parts for and is pretty beaten up.
Looking at the technica 1200 series or possibly a Rega.

What do you guys have and If you know what are the advantages of buying secondhand over new?

Depends on how much you want to spend. Do you want to be able to record to mp3?

It's pretty easy to find vinyl rips so no not really.

It only needs to play 33s and 45s and I'd be looking at around $500 - $700

*edit* - After having a bit of a research, I'm partial to the Rega P1-P2 and the Pro-ject Debut III.
Reviews are few and far between and not very detailed.

There's heaps of options. You can get fully automatic ones from $200. It just depends on the quality you want.
I paid $350 for mine, which is a fairly basic SONY model.

I've read a lot about these - http://hunch.com/record-players/music-hall-mmf-5-1/2747504/
Vinyl enthusiasts seem to lean towards these models.

Only a few (maybe 25ish) and mainly collectable, but I'm started to pick a few up to play.

Recently bought:

Also, I've decided to go with the Pro Ject Debut III Esprit

Wish I could fork out that much for a record player. I probably should, seeing as ive paid more than twice as much for a single record than I did the player.

Well the player is around $1000, But I'm mainly paying for the glass platter and upgraded cartridge.
The Debut III sits around the $500 mark and can be upgraded once the money for parts comes around.

Yeah, I know the feeling.
I won't have the dosh to upgrade the system to match the player at this stage, maybe in a few months.

Brad, im after a record player that spins at 78 rpm. You know of any? This is the really old-school speed that has since been proven useless.

I just bought a 10" at 78 rpm and want to listen to it.

The Project Debut (That I picked up) has an attachment for playing 78's.
I can only find UK prices and it seems to be around the 20 pound mark.

Also look into any old technics tables from the late 80's, mainly the 1200.
Should have no problems playing it.

*EDIT - also look at the SL-1200 which should play it but I can't find specifics, these players tend to be about $300 cheaper than the 1200's.
