AFL
Has got to be one of, if not the roughest team sport in the world. There are of course other contact team sports but some wear more protection don't they? I guess with AFL the nature of the game isn't inherently rough, it's more the intensity at which it's played and how players put their bodies on the line.
Yesterday prime example. Poor Michael Barlow snapped his leg in two just by his commitment to the play. No-ones fault. Just a result of the intensity and speed of the play.

That was not my intention.
I'm literally shocked to have watched that poor guy get his leg broken yesterday. It was sickening.

Yeah I know, let me put it this way, if I wanted to troll my NRL loving mates I'd quote that post verbatim and get a massive rise out of them.
This was in the paper a couple of weeks ago. That's pretty much the mentality in NSW, it's seen as a soft sport. If you don't want your kid to get hurt, you put them in aussie rules or soccer.

Drifty has a point, I'm an NRL fan and I scoffed at that comment.
I seriously believe that NRL has a much harder toll on your body than AFL, but I am not saying that first grade AFL doesn't.

Re: AFL
Ok. My thread wasn't titled "AFL > NRL"
I wasn't having a go at other sports. My comment about AFL being rough was because there seem to be serious injuries that occur through 'accidental' contact and falls/knocks resulting from marks, etc. I was trying to make a distinction between sports where body on body contacts are expected and these more unexpected types of incidents (like head clashes while running back into a pack)
(this is not a dig at NRL)

Re: AFL
Hey bec i know, how sad for barlow. By his own team mate too. Did u see he stood up straight after he got hit. (well tried to) Afl has more serious injuries than any other aussie sport by far.
How long does a broken leg take to heal? (7 weeks?) You know he runs 15km in an afl game. Hope he comes back ok. Go Freo!!!!!!!!!

had to do it coz you pulled me up on labor, haha
I like both rugby and AFL.
Personally, I think Union would be the toughest, but AFL is definitely up there. These guys run more than ANY football code, fact.
Also, there are rules which make contacts like barlows a bit more common in AFL than rugby.
Players are not allowed to look at another player within a contested possession or mark, they must keep their eyes on the ball or risk a free kick
to the opposition.
So team mates do run into each other because they have no idea who else is going for the ball.
It is sad for Barlow because he has had such a fairytale year.

Yeh I saw it Bali. Was awful!!!! He's going to be out for the rest of the season for sure. Bones take a long time to heal to the point when you could risk contact again. Plus he is going to have to get his general fitness back
Thank you Cap for articulating what I was trying to say about the other types of contact.

Bones take 6-8 weeks to heal depending on region and severity
