R18+ games
http://www.theleader.com.au/news/local/news/general/gamers-petition-falls-short/1880387.aspx
What is Australia's problem? For such a developed country and leader in many fields we are way behind the times in technology (crap broadband) and not having adult games. Seriously, we have R18+ movies and if some kid watches the saw films and and other horror films and doesn't go out and kill someone than I am sure that having graphic games are not going to lead to murderous deeds.
We will get R18 games one day and we will look back and think, what took so long?
Grow up Australia!

Damn.
I thought we'd get them after that army general left.
Hopefully we eventually, as ryno said, grow up.

In Darwin a new political party has started. I think they are called "the sex party" they are representing the hookers up here.
All they claim to want to do is talk about sex and and make video games less graphic than they are. Not cool hey.
I have never really thought about r rated games before.
What other western countries allow them?

ok so i just read the linked story. So if they do make an R rating classification will games get more graphic? or are they just trying to push up the ma15+ away from teenagers. I never buy a game if its not ma15+.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_banned_video_games
The above link tells you about games banned in Australia or heavily edited. In the U.S no game has ever been banned and in the UK only a few have.
The problem is that when a game comes out with heavy graphics, sexual references or drug use they are sometimes banned in Australia and will only be released if they are modified by the developers, eg left 4 dead. As recently as Alien Vs Predator was banned and then later overturned on appeal. Banning AvP in the first place is a joke when you consider games like dead space and resident evil have been out for years and are way more violent.
I understand why they ban these games as we don't have a proper rating for these kinds of themes. However, we most certainly should have an adult rating so we can choose to play these types of games and don't have to import them. Like we have the choice weather or not to hire/buy R18 or X rated movies.
The government doesn't have a leg to stand on. If parents don't want their children to play these types of games, then its their responsibility to lay down the house rules, its none of the governments business.

Don't know where you got that from, they're on the opposite side of the debate
Censorship
* Bring about the establishment of a truly national classification scheme which includes a uniform non-violent erotica rating for explicit adult material for all jurisdictions and through all media including the Internet and computer games.
* Introduce an R and X rating for computer games
* To overturn mandatory ISP filtering of the Internet and return Internet censorship to parents and individuals.
* We oppose the mandatory retention of all Australian users’ internet browsing history and emails by ISPs for at-will inspection by law enforcement agencies, and support strong judicial oversight over the ability of law enforcement to access individuals’ internet and email data.

I got that from the news promos they did and the paper articles. If i was 16 and been playin games for years i would want to be able to play any game.
Their main goal is to legalise brothels up here. Which they should have the freedom to do. Mainly for their saftey.
Not sure why they are bothering with video games when their main goal relates back to making more money through prostitution.
The internet sex industry is represented also.

This sucks.
I think the government are really naive in the way they think censorship will solve all the worlds problem. Fat chance.
People will always bypass it, if need be.
We already do it now, by importing US games like Left 4 Dead 2
Australia is supposed to be a "free" country but it's getting less and less so.

I know i few people who have been there for a "massage". It is funny sitting out the front of the pub and they come out late in the arvo for a drink. They are all at least 40. Pretty grose but apparently pretty cheap.

Re: R18+ games
lol, if Abbott gets into power, he doesnt know shit about I.T. He doesnt even know there is a debate on R18+ games and he is quite religious so I can imagine how he will weigh in on this. On one hand we have Conway and on the other we have Abbott. We cant win.
Dont even get started on what Abbott will do to the NBN if he gets in.

Re: R18+ games
Honestly, no matter who is in power, nothing will change. Australia is in no turmoil in any way; nothing needs to be done.
We have no major issues at all, that is why politics is a joke over here. It's all cosmetic bullshit.
