Re: government and privacy
In Australia, we now have a block of political opportunists who have been largely captured by corporate interests. They are divided into two right wings - the Australia Labor Party and the coalition of the Liberal and National Parties. Authoritarian tendencies as evidenced by the measures such as outlined in the above article are common to both.
A vote for either will see the interests of the wealthy and privileged protected in a time of uncertainty where the oil and dollar economies are threatened, the world's economic focus is changing to China and the consequences of unchecked global over heating may lead to shortages of the necessities of life.
The "anti-terror" laws and censorship and control of the internet are seen as contingencies by the ruling elites for times ahead when competition for scarce resources may compromise their hold on power and privilege.
Beware the shills for the right wing parties other than the Labor Party, who in forums like this attempt to use these issues to divert voters away from the government and to the current opposition. An opposition that is either silent or has a track record of removing rights in the guise of protecting us from "terrorists".
If the Australia electorate ever wanted to find out who really runs this country they should one day elect a parliament of minor parties and independents by placing Labor or Coalition candidates last or 2nd last on their ballot papers.
They would soon find out if they were really allowed to have a democracy or not.
